11MH020 - Recognizing and Treating Perinatal Depression and Substance Use During Pregnancy and Postpartum Depression during pregnancy and the postpartum is a widespread, serious heath problem for women, infants, and families. Recognition, discussion and treatment of mood and anxiety symptoms during and after pregnancy is just now beginning to be integrated as an important component of health and human services. Just as the stigma of mental health issues has been a barrier to effective treatment, women who may have problems with addiction or substance use struggle to find support and resources. This workshop will explore the epidemiology of perinatal depression as well as discussion about substance use disorders including cultural, risk and protective factors that influence the onset and course of these disorders. Assessment of depression and substance use during pregnancy and postpartum will be covered using the DSM-IV-TR and other empirically supported assessment tools. Differential diagnosis will focus on the co morbidity of symptoms related to depression vs. what are normal mood changes, addiction and pregnancy. An overview of empirically supported interventions will be presented as well as a basic introduction to engaging and treating women diagnosed with perinatal depression and/or substance abuse focusing primarily on techniques related to interpersonal psychotherapy and evidence-based models for treating substance abuse disorders. |
